Why be indispensable?

There are lots of reasons that you might want to feel indispensable…and this is not the same as irreplaceable. Indispensable means people count on you…you do things in a way that boosts productivity and makes life easier for your team. Your contribution is such that you matter daily. There are lots of reasons you might want to be indispensable including the top two…job security and advancement. If you have hopes and dreams of moving forward in your organization…of being offered more opportunities, then this is for you. Another big reason is job satisfaction.

The more invested you are in the work you are doing–no matter what that work is–the more satisfaction you will get out of it, and the more you will be appreciated and noticed.

A Story

I tell a story in my book, “What They See: How to Stand Out and Shine in Your New Job” about a woman who is the sandwich making person at a training institute we’ve got here in BC where many of our first responders train. I took my certification in conflict coaching at this institution and I remember distinctly the care and attention with which this woman made the sandwiches in the cafeteria each day, and how people lined up for many many minutes to wait as this woman smiled at each person and made a spectacular sandwich with care and kindness.

I never did learn her name, but her work has stayed with me…and you might be thinking…it was a sandwich….yes…and my point is, it doesn’t matter what it is you are doing. This woman takes her job to be more than that…she connects with each person, gives them a beautiful smile, asks them about their day, and makes something special just for them.

It was more about connection and kindness…and I heard this week that she is still there…still doing her job with the utmost of care.
