153 CBJ: The Power of Appreciation in the Workplace

November 30, 2017

What is Appreciation?

Abraham Maslow (of Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs fame), said that recognition is a basic human need. Appreciation is positive recognition that shows a person what they do is valued and matters. Appreciation in the workplace helps the employee to feel that they contribute and that the work they do has meaning and is of value.

It’s powerful stuff.

There is an expression that says, “what you focus on grows”, and if negativity and disappointment and feelings of non-worthiness or “not good enough” are what gets focused on, then a cycle of negativity begins that is hard to get out of.

I know I have to not look at social media sometimes because I find it so sad.  So many people seem to want to get into arguments and trash-talk each other from behind the safety of their computer screens. The level of nasty is sometimes astounding, and it makes my heart hurt, because I continue to hang on to the conviction that MOST human beings are decent. I bet that if they were actually present in a room full of people, much of what they say online would never be said. And, I’ve been called “pathologically positive” for thinking just such things.

In this episode:

In this episode, I take a look at all the amazing benefits both employees and employers receive when there is a culture of appreciation going on. There is actually a biological reason that appreciation and gratitude are good for you too! I share the benefits and how to increase the culture of appreciation both as an employee and an employer.

Tune in!

YOU are appreciated!
