21: CD Podcast Episode: Giving and Receiving Feedback

May 7, 2012

www.communicationdiva.comIn this podcast episode, Jenn talks about ways to more effectively give or receive feedback, both at work and at home.

Topics covered include:

Ways to be effective when giving feedback

  • Motivation: Why are you giving this feedback?
  • Being timely about it…give it as soon as possible after the behaviour or event.
  • Taking care of where you are when you give the feedback. Confidentiality is important.
  • Ask permission to give feedback
  • Use “I” language
  • Being specific, give concrete examples
  • Give feedback that’s useful or helpful
  • Make it about changeable things
  • Ask for reaction to the feedback

Ways to best receive feedback

  • Try not to be defensive
  • Feedback can be a gift
  • Take time to respond…breathe!
  • Be curious
  • You don’t have to agree with it. You can thank the person and still disagree

Giving and receiving feedback effectively is an important part of workplace professionalism, and of any good relationship. Take time to think about how you give and/or receive feedback, and how you might improve some of the points above. These are often points that are evaluated in job performance reviews, so learning more about them can actually improve your outcomes.

Jenn would love YOUR feedback on this or any other article or podcast episode!

Hi Jenn,
I am trying to download the below 2 podcasts to listen to them offline; however, I am getting an error message.
02: CD Podcast Episode: 10 Minutes to Better Listening
21: CD Podcast Episode: Giving and Receiving Feedback
Would you be able to help me get a copy of them?

Thanks, Fred

Hi Fred,
the best way to do that would be to download the free app called Stitcher Radio (available on the right hand sidebar of my website…you’ll see the black and colorful box) and that way you can have all the episodes you want there and can access them offline. It’s like having your own customized CD. You can download that to any handheld device or to your computer. You can also do the same through iTunes, as the show is listed there and can be downloaded then played anytime offline. Those are the best ways to load them and likely better than trying to download from the website, although I’m not sure why you re getting an error. I will look into it via my hosting platform and see what’s going on, but again using iTunes or Stitcher Radio are two easy options. Thanks for listening! Jenn

I think that acknowledging feedback has always been the pilar for success specially for most businesses. Customers don’t need to hear what they want to hear, they want to hear what they need, and hearing them out is the first way to do this. 🙂

I agree completely! Listening is almost becoming a lost art…and even with all the technology we have that supposedly helps us communicate better, hearing others seems to get lost in many cases. Thanks for the comment!
